Outreach & Short breaks

Short breaks

Our Short breaks service offers an opportunity for disabled children and those with complex needs to have fun, gain independence and experience new things, whilst their families get to take a much needed break from their 24-hour caring.

Step-A-Side has been providing short breaks services from our Ofsted registered children’s residential provision to disabled children and their families in Gloucestershire for many years; supporting young people who have complex health needs, physical disabilities or behavioural difficulties. We work with a variety of other agencies, social workers and health care professionals to ensure that disabled children and their families are properly supported and that the ‘short breaks’ are genuinely tailored to the individual to give a quality experience.

Short breaks can reduce family stress and are proven to prevent families from getting to crisis. Through Step-A-Side short breaks, disabled children and their families are having the opportunity to get valuable rest periods, allowing for ‘decompression’ and refocusing; which both parents and children have reported as being so vital.

‘Short breaks’ can be arranged for regular overnights, days, weekends or weeks – or they can be provided for a combination of the above. They are genuinely tailored to meet the needs of the child and their family and we would be delighted to discuss how we can help. Please drop us an email or call 01594 501230 for more information.

We have dom care, bathing twice a week, excellent staff always make my daughter laugh and comfortable around them. She loves the staff who care for her. Also we have respite. They take her out and about in her community. She does all the things she loves doing, eating out, bowling, swimming, butterfly farm and many other things - the staff always have her well being in mind, doing things that she would enjoy and respond to. She loves her trips out."

We also offer community based breaks or support in your own home. This ‘Outreach’ service is about providing the children with a quality, fun experience which could range from swimming, cycling, watching football matches, attending youth clubs, bowling, cinema trips, go-karting – whatever takes the individuals fancy!

Our ‘Outreach’ staff team are young, bright, motivated and energetic – the sort of people that children want to spend time with and who provide great role models.

Children and young people are encouraged to pick their Outreach worker, which enables positive professional relationships based on trust to be built, enhancing the experience. Unlike many other agencies, we don’t struggle with staff retention – we genuinely value our support workers and have been recognised as an Investor in People (IIP). When relationships are forged with children, they are consistent.

Step-A-Side have taken every request into consideration in order to provide the most appropriate carers and ensure that all my son's needs are met. The carers are wonderful - they 'read' my son excellently and every week they do everything to ensure he has the best of times as well as maintaining safety and dignity. They always all return with smiles on their faces and exhausted!!! There is excellent communication between us and I trust them implicitly with my son."

I have found Step-A-Side to be very enthusiastic and accommodating of my client's needs. They were happy to offer 2 hours of support per week where other agencies would not. The support worker is punctual, enthusiastic, inspirational to my client and could not be a better match. The communication is always detailed and regular, without having to be asked and they are happy to discuss any concerns of queries I have openly and promptly."
